DEADLINE FOR ALL 2012 DCA & NYSCA GRANTS IS: Friday, October 14, 2011, midnight

Premier Grants
Premier Grants support first-time grantees — both individual Staten Island artists and community arts and cultural organizations — that present art and cultural programming through projects and public presentations. Individual category can include collaborative groups of individuals. The grant is funded through the Greater New York Arts Development Fund (GNYADF) of New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Grant request range: $750-$3000. Preference will be given to the Undeserved Disciplines for 2012: Literature and Dance.

**All first-time applicants must attend a workshop. Applicants who HAVE NOT received funding in the past 2 years should attend an application workshop. See the schedule. Applicants may also view the Premier Web Tutorial to get access for coming to a workshop, however, first time applicants are encouraged to attend a workshop.

Funding Criteria:
a) artistic merit and cultural significance
b) clearly stated objectives
c) clear and realistic plan for implementation
d) appropriate request level and realistic budget for stated proposal
e) need and impact on the artistic discipline, geographic area, or local population: projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention
f) demonstrated community interest or support of project
g) applicant's artistic experience, skill, and exhibition/performance history. Funding priorities: artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials.

What is not eligible:
a) organizations receiving direct or discretionary funds from the Department of Cultural Affairs in the 2012 fiscal year
b) organizations with operating income budgets over $100,000 for two of the last three fiscal years
c) programs that are essentially religious, recreational, rehabilitative, or therapeutic
d) universities, colleges, primary and secondary schools and districts, school affiliates or components, in-school activities or programs/activities that exclusively serve a student audience with no public component
e) programs serving only the applicant organization's members
f) operating expenses of privately-owned facilities (homes and studios)
g) deficit budgets, capital improvements, equipment purchases, fundraising events, scholarships, juror fees, prizes, lobbying expenses, entertainment, reception or food expenses, any non-arts related expenses or administrative costs unrelated to project.

- Letter of commitment from all primary personnel working on the project with you, specifying services and fees
- Budget (see online form for template)
- Venue letter of agreement/interest
- Proof of SI Residency
- Letter of support/recommendation

REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS FOR ORGANIZATIONS:
- Applicant resume, and resumes of any artistic personnel involved in the grant project
- Letter of commitment from all primary personnel working on the project with you, specifying services and fees
- Budget (see online form for template)

- Financial statement from applicant’s most recently completed fiscal year: audited financial statement, treasurer’s report, or applicant’s most recent IRS Form 990
- Board of directors list with affiliations
- Proof of non-profit status: (must provide one of the following)
1) NYS Not-for-Profit Charter from Board of Regents under Section 216 of the Education Law
2) NYS Charities Registration (Article 7A), with the organization’s registration number
3) Certificate of incorporation under S.402 of the NYS Not-for-Profit Law

Premier Grant Evaluation Guidelines

Work Sample: 30% = Does it show that the artist/organization can successfully create the project they propose from the work shown in the sample? Is the quality of the work sample sufficient? Does it have artistic merit/cultural significance?

Community Outreach (Public Component): 20% = How will their project be available to the public? Is it accessible to everyone? Which communities does it serve? Projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention.

Narrative: 30% = Is their project description, artist statement, and artist bio clear (does the narrative leave you asking a lot of questions)? Does it show that the applicant has experience creating this kind of work, or that they can successfully do what they propose? Take into consideration their past work. Does the project have meaning, and does it have a positive impact on the community?

Budget: 20% = Are their numbers realistic? Money can never be used for food/refreshments/purchasing equipment. Do they have a realistic artist fee, materials fee, etc? Artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials expenses are given priority.

Art Fund Grant
Previously funded COAHSI Premier artists and arts organization awardees may apply for funding for community projects in any arts or humanities discipline. No conduit or 501(c) 3 required. Individual category can include collaborative groups of individuals. Requests range from $750 - 5000. Organizations may apply for up to three grants, the total amount not to exceed $5000 (maximum grant).Preference will be given to the Undeserved Disciplines for 2012: Literature and Dance. The grant is funded through the Greater New York Arts Development Fund (GNYADF) of New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).

*Applicants who HAVE NOT

Encore Grant
The Encore Grant is for individual artists and nonprofit organizations that present programming of artistic and cultural signifigance in any artistic/cultural discipline, including crafts and folk arts, will be considered. Applicants must have a 501 (c) 3 or conduit. These grants are not for fellowships, subsidies, or entitlements. Projects must be open to the public and take place on Staten Island during the year 2012. Requests range from $500 - $5000. The grant is funded through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

Funding Criteria:
a) artistic merit and cultural significance
b) clearly stated objectives
c) clear and realistic plan for implementation
d) appropriate request level and realistic budget for stated proposal
e) need and impact on the artistic discipline, geographic area, or local population: projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention
f) demonstrated community interest or support of project
g) applicant's artistic experience, skill, and exhibition/performance history.
Funding priorities: artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials.

What is not eligible:
a) organizations seeking funds directly from NYSCA in the 2012 fiscal year regardless of their application's status
b) organizations with operating income budgets over $300,000 for two of the last three fiscal years
c) programs that are essentially religious, recreational, rehabilitative, or therapeutic
d) universities, colleges, primary and secondary schools and districts, school affiliates or components, in-school activities or programs/activities that exclusively serve a student audience with no public component
e) past grant recipients who have not filed their final reports
f) programs serving only the applicant organization's members
g) operating expenses of privately-owned facilities
h) deficit budgets, capital improvements, equipment purchases, fundraising events, scholarships, juror fees, prizes, lobbying expenses, entertainment, reception or food expenses
i) applicants or conduits who cannot present a valid tax-exempt Federal ID number.

REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH CONDUIT
- Applicant resume, and resumes of any artistic personnel involved in the grant project
- Letter of commitment from all primary personnel working on the project with you, specifying services and fees
- Budget (see online form for template)
- Venue letter of agreement/interest
- Proof of SI Residency
- Letter of support/recommendation
- Financial statement from CONDUITS most recently completed fiscal year: audited financial statement, treasurer’s report, or applicant’s most recent IRS Form 990
- CONDUITS Board of directors list with affiliations
- Proof of CONDUITS non-profit status: (must provide one of the following)
1) NYS Not-for-Profit Charter from Board of Regents under Section 216 of the Education Law
2) NYS Charities Registration (Article 7A), with the organization’s registration number
3) Certificate of incorporation under S.402 of the NYS Not-for-Profit Law

REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS FOR ORGANIZATIONS:
- All of the above EXCEPT Proof of Staten island residency

Encore Evaluation Guidelines

Original Work Grant
Original Work Grants support individual Staten Island artists of all disciplines for the creation of new work that breaks new ground and addresses the concept of community. Four grants are awarded in the amount of $2500. These grants are highly competitive. The grant is funded through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

To be eligible for the 2012 NYSCA Original Work grant, the applicant must meet ALL the following criteria:
a) applicant must not have received an Original Work grant since 2006
b) applicant must live in Staten Island
c) applicant must be at least 18 years old
d) applicant must not be a full-time student at the time of the application or grant period
e) applicant must be in good standing for any grants previously received from COAHSI.

Funding Criteria:
a) artistic excellence and cultural significance
b) community-based content, subject matter, or process
c) artist has clear and realistic goals
d) artist's experience in regard to the proposal
e) exhibition, program, or cultural activity must be accessible to the public and take place between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.

Original Work Evaluation Guidelines

Work Sample: 40% = Does it show that the artist can successfully create the project they propose from the work shown in the sample? Is the quality of the work sample sufficient? Does it have artistic merit/cultural significance

Community Outreach (Public Component): 25% = How will their project be available to the public? Is it accessible to everyone? Which communities does it serve? Projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention. Project must take place between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

Narrative: 25% = Is their project description, artist statement, and artist bio clear (does the narrative leave you asking a lot of questions)? Does it show that the applicant has experience creating this kind of work, or that they can successfully do what they propose? Does the proposed project broaden the artists’ scope? Take into consideration their past work. Does the project have meaning, and does it have a positive impact on the community?

Budget: 10% = Are their numbers realistic? Money can never be used for food/refreshments/purchasing equipment. Do they have a realistic artist fee, materials fee, etc?
